Because over the years, memory capacity increases, and manufacturers need to move their stock of older chips off the shelves. There weren't any 1gb single chips back in 1995, and in 1990 you couldn't find single 256mb chips.

As newer high-capacity chips hit the market, demand drops for the smaller ones. Manufacturers don't want to take a loss on their existing RAM supplies, so they put them in base systems while they still can.

Basically to present a low cost system to consumers. They also hope you will choose to upgrade when you purchase the computer. This way they keep the price down and make money. It's only on a few systems though. The systems I get have 512MB of base RAM. I then add 1GB or Crucial RAM instead of using the more expensive vendor RAM. The systems I buy at the university I work for are Thinkcenter 8810-D3U.

It's the computer industry they want you to spend more money on computer parts been that way for a very long time now.

When you get a pre-built computer like a Compaq, Dell etc they are built the there standards and not yours.

This is partly the reason i buy all my parts myself so i know exactly what i am getting and know what i want it's easier that way so i know what parts i can upgrade and can't etc.

One of two reasons. Either your system requires parallel memory chips, or the manufacturer got a better deal (read cheaper) on the smaller sized memory. (which is most common)

definite it is nice.... that could supply you 512 twin get entry to and the final 256 may be basically single processed so it would be a nil.5 the cost. yet that's greater useful than the only having the two-256

Due to dual channel mode. It makes the computer run faster then with a single 512mb memory!

because most likely the motherboard supports dual channel memory and its alot faster than a single stick ...
