I only have an early Tivo (Series 1) but I plan to upgrade my TV to HDTV? How bad will the quality be if I try to record with this Tivo in the Best quality setting? Anyone have any experience?

You can't record HDTV with a Series 1 nor a series 2 tivo.. You should upgrade to the Series 3 if you want to be able to record HD.

As far as the quality it will be exactly the same as it is now. Getting an HDTV will not 'improve' the quality of the best recording quality.

If you have a series 1, you won't be recording or replaying HDTV, because the series 1 boxed don't have an HD tuner. They are digital, but not HD. To get HD, you have to get one that is qualified as HD - I think they start with series 3 or higher.

Correction: Series 2 allows HD recording.
