Nintendo offered replacement wrist straps (up to 4 per console) to registered users in the USA. The replacement straps are thicker and not as likely to break.

While there are a lot of anecdotal stories of broken TVs caused by controllers whose straps broke, the fact is many owners did have their original straps break within the first month of ownership, which is unacceptably poor quality. Nintendo was smart to offer the replacement straps. Hard to believe they didn't encounter this in playtesting the Wii.
