LOVE the show, too -- although a little annoyed about such a long hiatus 'til next month.
Basically, I interpret the word "Lost" as a double d'tendre. Not only are they lost in the obvious sense of the word, but each character seems to be "lost" with some internal struggle. This is their chance to "find" themselves for redemption.
Also, I think the people were all chosen to be on this flight together so they can start a new world. The 2 things that support my theory on this are:
1. How is it that no one has found them? Maybe there is no one left other than them... meaning that the rest of the world no longer exists - probably obliterated by the likes of a nuclear holocaust.
2. The baby could be symbolic of a new beginning or "rebirth" of a new civilization.
For sure, there is always a lot to ponder about this show, which is why fans like you and I are tolerant of their erratic show airings.
Hope my thoughts help a bit. I'm interested to see what other answers you'll receive as it's always nice to hear other people's perspectives.
PS: I've been thinking about "Lost" since I responded above ... and an idea hit me like a ton of bricks! Remember, how in the movie "Planet of the Apes" it ended with Charlton Heston riding along the beach to the Forbidden Zone -- only to find out that the planet he's been on all along was Earth -- proof of which was the demolished upper part of the Statue of Liberty! I wonder if "Lost" is following part of that same storyline. This kind of scenario would further support my theory that the "Lost" people were chosen to start a new world and must redeem themselves in order to do so! I'm further predicting that they will find a similar historic monument at the season finale.

I think it is about looking beyond the surface. Nothing is what it seems. You can't judge the people by what they are, you don't know their pasts that made them that way.
When you stick a bunch of random people together in a small place, it is a great opportunity for personal growth. Each character has been chosen for the island it seems in order to face their "demons" All that survive will emerge as new and better people for the experience.

i think that everybody on the show is really dead and the island they are on is like a judgement place because whenever they learn something about themselves or fix a problem for themselves or someone else they die, which could be they are decided to go to hell or heaven. And that show is Awesome.
