Yes it has happened to me. I pop them and throw them out. Otherwise my cat will attack and try to eat them.

Pends whether you wanna get rid of the balloons or you wanna have some fun with them. Here's a list.
To get rid of them:
-Open the door and let them fly out
-Let them deflate on their own and dispose of them
-Sell em
To have some fun:
-Put them all in your employee (or friend's) room w/out telling them.
-Go to work with em and poke a hole so they fly around your office expelling helium everywhere (imagine the chaos if you have 50 balloons flying around)
-Pop them and use the rubber as.... slingshots
-Pop them and use the rubber as.... rubber bands
-Draw the faces of your close friends on the balloons and have someone match the balloons with their corresponding counterparts.
-Do some paper mache
-Find someone with ligyrophobia (fear of loud noises) and blackmail them with the threat of popping balloons.
-Duct tape a sharp object (might want parental supervision) to the end of a broom stick and pop all the balloons, using the rubber as.... a secondary food supply for your cat (don't actually do this one)
-Give em out to small children (sounds creepy but it's a nice gesture)
-Go around town, leaving balloons in strange places such as in Safeway, elevators, public restrooms, indoor soccer games, an airport (this may get you arrested), an airplane (this will get you arrested), a stranger's car, your neighbor's car, the animal shelter, police station, immigration offices, the DMV, your post office, etc.
I'm sure you can think of a ton of ways to dispose or use of these balloons on your own. Be creative, it might provide hours of entertainment.

I'd just leave the balloon, just for the effect of an indecisive balloon. It's cool. Leave it.

Cut the strings off & bap them around the house with the kids -- if they're really "flat" we still bap them around the house & try not to let them hit the ground!

I have kids who like to play with them, but when they are nearly deflated , I admit, my husband and I like to inhale the helium (not around the kids). Then we talk to each other, sounding like two mice. We laugh!

YES, IT'S HAPPENED. IF THEY'VE ACTUALLY LASTED UNTIL THE NEXT DAY, JUST POP THEM WITH A NEEDLE OR A PIN AND THROW THEM AWAY.
