mature and realize that they are not the center of the universe? If so, when?

For the most part humans (as a group)act considering only themselves, much like a baby. Now that we have the emergence of awareness of other species, when will we act with their interests considered along side of our own?

We wish. Just ask the Dodo (if you could)

It's the tragedy of the commons. If you and I stop ruining the planet, it won't stop anyone else from doing it. It's not affecting our personal lives right now.

Plus, a bunch of people have a book that they believe tells them that everything on earth was put here for us to use.

I'm scared too...

First, good question. I don't know if my answer will be good enough for it.

I think this is going to happen if the human race survives long enough. Humans have matured through the ages. The situation might seem a little hopeless at the moment, but what one human gets to see of human history is pretty much nothing. Take, for example, ancient Egypt, where they had a pretty stable community for about 3000 years with minor changes in religious beliefs and the state system. It might take long, but people change and learn, though not as quick as one would expect.
In fact, just that people like you have started to pose questions like this shows improvement. So the answer is yes, but when...is definitely pretty late, i think.

I think we have started to... wel atleast some of us have. The hardcoe christians keep setting us back with their intelligent design crap. But I think most people realize we aren't the center of the universe right now, but they are overshadowed by the extremist crazy people.

The baby realises it is not the centre of the universe when it becomes aware of the fact that it is just one little blob in a vast sea of humanity.

Humans will not realise they are not the centre of the universe until they too become aware of the fact that they are but mere flecks of sputum on the vast sea of the universe...........ie. either when we meet aliens, or never.

Umm good question. I think many individuals have come to that realization but it is difficult to combat pride and arrogance. Not a perfect answer but it is my opinion.

as a baby matures it realizes its self identity as the center - egocentric. as one matures, one attains person-hood - sociocentric identity, theological and legal choices and responsibilities. no fixed age, it depends on circumstances in which we are brought up.
