It seems like most of the major retailers (Gap, Victoria's Secret, etc.) have more underwear styles available such as bikinis, briefs, boy shorts, etc. Thongs were very popular in the late 1990s, to the point where girls I knew would wear them every day. Is this fad going away? Are thongs going to be worn only on certain occassions now, and does anyone prefer bikini or brief underwear over thongs?

I think now the thong is just another article of clothing where you have a choice of wearing, instead of everyday like it was back in the early 2000's.
I think now, it's like a mood. Like when you'd say, "today, I think I'll wear a skirt instead of pants." Or this "I'll wear this color, instead of that". I think it applies to the thong. There are days when I'd rather wear a boy short instead of bikini; or sometimes it'll depend on what we're wearing for the day. If we're wearing something like a clingy pant/jeans, probably go with a thong so there will be no VPL. Or when I wear a dress or skirt, I like to wear the lacy boy short style. And yes, we like to save those special panties/thongs for 'special occasions'. ;-)
I don't think the thong is a fad any longer. It's here to stay, and I think it's just another style we can choose from and add to our "panty drawer". I do prefer the bikini over the thong. (No briefs for me please).

When I was growing up I wanted to wear thongs because I saw my mom wearing them, and I thought they were sexy compared to my granny panties. For the past 6 or 7 years I've been more into tangas and boy shorts, they are extremely sexy, leave more to the imagination than thongs and their comfort is unbelievable. Bryan still buys me lingerie w/ thongs and I have them for need associated w/ fashion, but I would prefer to never, ever wear them!

I think the thong trend went away when little pre-teens started wearing them and then started dressing more provocatively.
I don't think it's necessary to follow fashion trends with your underwear.. Just wear what you think looks nice, and is comfy on you, and if you have a significant other, they'll probably enjoy it too! ;)

Yeah, for me, thongs are more of a utility for when I don't want an underwear line.

I refuse to wear thongs due to the sanitation issues associated with them.
I prefer hipster style, (lower cut on the hips).

Yes, they're less popular. Women have figured out that they cause yeast infections and other unhappy conditions and that there are other ways to avoid panty lines. Why do you want to know?

Yes they are. Myself included, I think people have discovered the new styles to be very sexy and more comfortable.
