Bollywood (Devanāgarī: बॉलीवुड, Nasta'liq: بالیوڈ) is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. The term is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to the whole of Indian cinema.

The name is a portmanteau of Bombay, the English name for Mumbai, and Hollywood, the centre of the American film industry.

India has a huge film industry, perhaps even bigger than that in the U.S. "Bollywood" refers to this fact in the same generic fashion that people refer to the U.S. "Hollywood" topics, trends, activities, etc. etc.
