Have to agree with Svartalf on this one:

Plato was talking about a civilization of several millennia before his time (so he says); Nobody in Greece mentions the great battle between Athens and Atlantis prior to Plato; and Plato does a lot in allegory (his Cave, etc.)

Further, the Atlantis tale goes along nicely with the classic flood myth and there were many of those around, so perhaps Plato had some influence from this.

The alien thing might have some merit, but not as most think. That aliens could have come here to populate this planet is unfounded. That an asteroid with some life form (bacteria) on it coming here has a higher probability (though plausible, there is no evidence here either)

Having done some major study recently, I have to say the answer is yes. Plato did write about a genuine civilization that existed about 1200 B.C., the location of which is highly debated. There are Egyptian records that correspond to Plato's writings in great detail. A few of the inaccuracies are easily explained by mistranslation. One of which being 9000 "years" instead a smaller time period as the Egyptian calendar was vastly different from the Greek.

The whole alien thing is way over blown and does not even need to be discussed. I think it mainly comes about because so few "knowledgeable" people protest that ancient people were too primitive to do much of what was accomplished.

Most realistic explanations for Atlantis refer to the circle of islands in the southern Aegean Sea, which were possibly left from a cataclysmic volcanic explosion that was the end of Atlantis. The Minoan culture from Crete is postulated as the closest surviving culture from Atlantis.

Humans created by aliens, don't think so but genesis of human intelligence from apes may have been introduced from outside or by mutation.

Plato actually heard the tale of atlantis from his teacher who heard it from an egyptian during his travels there. I firmly believe that the city existed at some point, there is too much evidence NOT to believe it. As for the alien thing....no. the only way the alien hypothesis could be correct is if we are willng to acknowledge that idea that the various gods of history were in reality aliens and that would undermine the ENTIRE basis of ALL religious belief.

It's impossible to tell whether the Egyptian sources plato alleges to as sources for his Atlantis tales are real or made up, but since he used Atlantis as an example of one of his crackpot ideal states, it's all too possible he made it up from scratch.

As for mankind being created by alien beings, what do you think the flying spaghetti monster did?

There certainly is a large ridge, off the rock of Giraltar beneath the sea. It would appear that this piece of land was once above the water and sank due to some sesemic activity. This is where Plato dexcribes it. It is quite a strong possibility. If not, it is an interesting peice of conversation.

I really don't know. I have seen some very compelling shows that do a good job at proving both sides of the argument. I would like to think that there was an Atlantis- we just haven't been able to decode where it is yet.

I believe that Atlantis existed, seems to be a lot of new discoveries that support his descriptions. I do not support the alien creation theory.

There has been unexplained leaps in technology centering around greece that text tells us were brought by the Atlantians. The mystery is where the atlantians really came from.

Then again I guess that is what you are asking.

There was and there is an Atlantis (Aztland) and it is currently in hibernation. Aliens? Only if you call the gods aliens. Although there are some who call aliens "gods."
