Try running the forty with ankle weights for the next 8-10 weeks. If you keep at it and can get your 40 yard time to about a 4.8 with the weights on, you may drop to a 4.4 or 4.5 without them. Just your basic 5lbs ankle weights should do. Most of the faster guys on my old middle school and high school teams used that approach.

Doubtful you run a true 4.8 in the eighth grade. But anyhow. The main key to the 40 is your start. Work on coming off in one smooth motion. Make sure you do not take a false step (usually with the back foot) where the foot shifts to the side or slightly back before moving forward. This is a key to starts at almost every position in football anyhow and would be good to develop early regardless of 40's. Also, work on generating power with your armswings and hip thrust as you explode out of the three-point stance.

A good start can make a slower runner look much better and fast runner really fast.

These guys know, us everthing above me. Here is something to add.

4.8 is good for an 8th grader. Your 40 times will get better with practice. Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 Forty. Reportedly a 4.7 in college.

When you are being timed, think of this. Less is better. Lighter is better. Start your run with keeping your head down at least 10 steps and pump your arms evenly with your stride. Do not ball up your fist. relax your fingers in a position almost as if your holding a drum stick or a pencil. Most 40 time are lost at the beginning and the end. When you practice your run, try 60-100 yard sprints to increase your 40.

Good Luck.

Without a doubt the best thing to do is do 40 yard sprints with a parachute dragging behind you.

Or, if you cannot rig up a parachute like thing, then run the dashes with arm and leg weights on you.

Or, you can also have a friend wrap a long rope around you and run behind you tugging at you to slow you down.
That is what the pros do to increase speed and endurance.
Best of Luck....

How fast can you run 40 yards in full gear with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter of a tie game in the rain with a 20 mph head-wind?
