here on PEI, the east coast of Canada we get them quite a lot, the storm in the pictures wasn't really that bad, i have seen power lines 6 or 7 inches thick with ice. they are just making it out to be bad cause Texas usually doesn't get snow or ice storms. must be global warming eh?

Yes, your pictures are accurate. They can occur anywhere where there is a winter climate. They are dangerous because the ice forms on power lines and trees and then even a bit of wind can cause severe breakage and outages. Road conditions become treacherous. Freezing rain is the worst as its rain the falls as a liquid but freezes on all surfaces. Sleet is like tiny balls of ice. I live in Kansas and have been through many.

The problem with ice is that it sometimes causes power lines and trees to totally collapse, causing damage that snow doesn't necessarily cause. Since Oklahoma and Texas are the states that are getting hit the hardest today, it is causing traffic difficulties as well. I live in Houston, TX, and we don't get a lot of freezing precipitation. Therefore, we aren't prepared with the type of equipment needed to clear highways.

Every winter! Luckily, I'm in Florida where we don't have this sort of thing. But yes, those winter storms do leave behind a death toll - what you see in the news is true. Up in our northern parts, it gets pretty violent out there.
