Good/bad? Why? Healthcare costs, cost of living, politics, etc. Family life and schools. Comparing it to the world, etc. What is your honest opinion and please keep it civil.

Parade magazine had an interesting article Sunday. China & Iran have larger military forces but the US is #1 in forces stationed abroad. We lead the world in nuclear weapons and sell more arms to governments than anyone else. We lead the world in imports. Germany has passed in exports and China right behind us. We have the largest economy with the largest national debt. Our unemployment higher that 38 other nations. We are highest in the consumption of oil but in 3rd place in both solar and in wind energy.

We spend more per person on healthcare ($5700) and 15% of our GDP goes to healthcare yet 43 countries have more docters per capita. 49 have more hospital beds. 33 nations(including Cuba) have a lower infant death rate. And 30th in life expectancy for women.

We have a greater incarceration rate than any other nation but the 3rd hightest rate for assaults and 15th for murder. 71 nations have a greater percentage of females in the legislature. In Iraq, 25% must be female-we have less than 17% in the new Congress.

Voting: The US is 139th of 172 nations that vote/hold elections.

I believe personally we're concentrating on the wrong things and are falling from our #1 status in things that should really count. Our schools are stuck in the 1950s and there is no help in sight. Healthcare costs(near $20,000 for a family of 4) are killing the middle class. Nations once looked to the US as a model and I believe that's changed dramatically. Our "me" society is crumbling amid patriotic cries of "we're number one!"

Good place to live and raise children. Opportunities abound. How many other places can you travel as far and see as many diverse things and not need a visa?

Is it perfect? Not no but hell no!

But the majority opinion is it's a great place. If it weren't, why would so many people want to come here and become citizens?

I am very proud to live in the United States of America. I can't imagine waking up everyday in a war-torn country, or a hut that gets washed away by storms, or watching my children die of starvation and disease. This is a great country built on the blood, sweat and tears of many men, women and children. But here is the kicker with me, i think our country is great but it is the hate from some of the people that make it undesirable for lots of others. You know how you can have some really great co-workers and some who are just horrible. Or maybe you know 3 catholics who are awesome and then "Jimmy" who ruins it for everyone else with his views. I guess when you have the opportunity to express your beliefs, ideas, words ect. then you have to be willing to put up with ALL THE beliefs and ideas of others. Our freedom is so completely taken for granted and in my opinion, wasted by so many. Most of our children don't know that to be able to walk in any church you want is such a blessing. They dont know that people are dying to do just that, literally DYING to worship. Most of our children don't know that 600 people, most in their age group, died of starvation last night between 7pm & 8pm. Just in one hour. I'm sure the numbers are much higher but you get my drift. I just wish that we could imbody into our youth the blessings of this country and what it stands for, not just the states and their capitals which i can learn on the weather channel. It would be nice if it was taught to appreciate our freedom right next to spelling and reading. I love my country and am so proud of all the men and women who keep me free everyday , because freedom isn't free, and that is a lesson we all learned again on 9/11. God bless us all.

Best country in the world, but since the Democrats took control of the House and Senate, expect things to get worse.

I think our country has gone down since Bush has got office. The No Child Left Behind law is pretty stupid. The war in Iraq is kind of iffy.

I think that the USA is a pretty bad country. All the people are obese, the schools are bad, healthcare costs (and pretty much all costs) are sky high... and the government isn't doing much to help (or, it isn't showing). There are people homeless everywhere you turn, poverty leaks through every crack... And people are critisizing the anthem because it has "God" in it. The country always has to suit the minority.
