"Death toll mounts from Midwest ice storm
Waves of freezing rain, sleet and snow since Friday had been blamed for at least 15 deaths in Oklahoma, six in Missouri, five in Iowa, two in Texas and one each in New York and Maine."

Now I'll grant you, that's sad...but do you think that is significant enough to be called a "Death toll" or is this just another way the media enjoys scaring the sht out of everyone?

Yes i agree with you. When i hear death toll i think like hundreds or thousands. Each life is very important, dont get me wrong, and if it is your father or mother that has passed it is very tragic. I do think that it is a definate eye catcher and ear grabber for the media to use to get our attention. I guess with so many news channels and so much news going on, they need something to pop out that is tragic. I would like to hear a story sometime about the "life meter" or " good will toll " on humanity and the earth. Then maybe people would want to listen to the news instead of being so turned off by it.

I think any event that takes a number of lives where they must be counted would have a death toll. It wasn't like it was a two car accident concentrated in one place. I think because it was so widespread throughout the nation but caused by this one single event, they are emphasizing how a storm of this magnitude can have effects across a vast area. I'm sure that as the ice melts and people get out and back to work and off to visit neighbors, the death toll will begin to rise.

Granted..... it is not as large a toll as that of our recent hurricanes and tsunamis, but a toll is number. And when you have multiple deaths, yes..... it is significant enough to count and to warn others of the dangers of such an ice storm. I don't believe the media wants to scare people. They are just emphasizing the widespread nature of this event.

It gets attention .

It is more profitable to say Death toll than storms kills 30 nationwide.
