I think we cal all agree that racism is a bad thing; It has no place in the 21st century. What I can't understand is how something like affirmative action is tolerated.
Affirmative action is a PC name for racisim; it discriminates against people because of the color of their skin. I think it is extremely hypocritical for black people preach the evils of racism in one hand and tacitly accept its practice in the other. The message it sends is that it is ok to be racist against Caucasians but it is unacceptable to be racist against any other group. Does anyone else see the lunacy of this position?

Maybe I am naïve but don’t we all start off at the same place. I know poverty and location where you go to school has a major factor on the quality of education you receive but it doesn’t limit the individual. I believe that it doesn’t matter who you are, if you work hard you will get an opportunity regardless of what race, sex, or religion you are. Like I said though I may just be naïve.

You have affirmative action confused with something else. I cannot imagine what. I am a HR Director and part of my position is to make sure that laws are followed including affirmative action. Let me tell you what it is first. No employer may discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, or sexual orientation. The EEO was not being followed, so that is when affirmative action was implemented. Affirmative action hence the name, simply affirmed that it was being followed and if it was not there could be sanctions. There is no quota. I have never even heard of one, except with some over zealous politicians. I have read it cover to cover and in a nutshell, it simply says that I cannot base my hiring criteria on factors other than merit. So what is wrong with that???

If two people were in a 100 meter race, and one person had a 50 m head start, would that be fair?

Racism exists, and it gives white people a head start (or more accurately, perhaps, it moves minorities back). The idea behind affirmative action is just to even the starting line--to move minorities up until they're even with whites.

Of course, when racism no longer exists, then affirmative action no longer needs to exist.

But it's far too easy to pretend that there is no racism left today, when in fact that just isn't the case. Remember, some states had laws banning interracial marriage as recently as twenty years ago, and the people who were raised in a segregated South are still in public office today.

Plus, I have a really hard time buying the "poor suffering white man" argument you're trying to promote. It just doesn't fit with reality.

I agree with your 100 meter race analogy. Affirmative action is an attempt to even the starting line.

I am a white guy (I'm not from anywhere near the Caucusus mountains, so "caucasian" is not accurate) and I am smart enough to realize that whining about affirmative action is like whining about extarcurricular activities.

Think of it this way- what is more ludicrous: using race as one factor in a decision process or using legacy to make the entire decision? Who does that favor?

I see the lunacy. People want others to do as they say, not as they do.

Martin Luther King said that an individual should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

What do Liberals not understand about that statement? Why do they choose to do exactly the opposite through the promotion and imposition of affirmative action programs? The practice of such policy is absolutely ludicrous.

Affirmative action is a politically correct way of saying "we feel sorry for you because you are a minority so we will give you a job regardless if you are or are not qualified, token."

I am embarrased and outraged for minorities in America that this even exists...and some rich, white, liberal elitists think you are too dumb to understand this fancy word.

I don't know about others, but I'm one minority that won't support "affirmative action" because I remember that the first quotas weren't about getting black in, but keeping Jews out!

If people want to be treated like the rest of society, then act like the rest of society. Go to school, learn to read, write, and speak ENGLISH, stop gang-banging, having 8 kids out of wedlock with no job, and using crack.
Public school is available to EVERYONE (that's why they call it public school...) Go there, do well, and get a scholarship to college (by the way, minorities ALREADY get special treatment on financial aid).
In other words, STOP TRYING TO SHOW US HOW DIFFERENT YOU ARE ( or think you are) AND TRY TO FIT IN.... Like it or not, that's what society in general wants...
