The movie version was released with a PG rating.
The original stage play script and songs were filled with sexual innuendos, however, plays do not receive MPAA ratings. The movie revised a lot of the words in the script and songs so as to release the movie to the masses.
It still amazes to hear little girls (mostly girls anyway) singing songs from the movie and not knowing what it is exactly they're singing about!

"Grease" was originally rated PG though most people think it should have been rated R because of the sexual references. In 2010 Paramount re-issued the film as a sing a long version and the rating was changed to PG-13 for Sexual Content, Teen Smoking and Alcohol Use and Language. Only the Sing-A-Long version is rated PG-13 which IMO does not make any sense if you're gonna reissue a film for a sing a long you might as well ask the MPAA to rerate the film by itself. Though they probably should have changed it back in 1998 to PG-13.

Because those who rate movies are trying to prevent kids from being exposed to too much violence, language, sexuality. Just because a child swears doesn't mean that its acceptable for them to be exposed to more. Children are not ready to deal with alot of the adult sitations in R rated movies. In fact, I saw "White Noise 2" the other night, which is rated PG13, and frankly, if I had kids, I wouldn't let MY 13 year old see that movie. WAY TOO MUCH violence. Its not acceptable. It gives kids the wrong idea about life. Kids are growing up way too fast these days, and its mostly due to the adult situations in the media and in movies. And don't think that I'm some 50 or 60 year old who can barely relate to being a child. I'm only 29, it wasn't that long ago that I was in your position, but, trust me, once you get into your 20s you'll see what I mean.

It seems to have always been a PG. Imdb shows previous ratings of films if they were different to the current one and Grease doesn't have anything but a PG.
