It means three hot meals and a place to sleep. As in an institution or jail. People use that phrase to compare it to say, living on the street. At least you get three hots and a cot ...

Everyone else has stated the answer (3 full hot meals and a BED)...
Though I'm saddened to read that MOST seem to equate it with jail or prison rather than it's TRUE origin with the Army (Military).
Once upon a time (1920's) prison didn't guarantee you 3 meals OR an actual bed...prison was where we sent people for PUNISHMENT !!
When I went to sea back during the 1980's we'd joke that prisoners (USA) had it BETTER than us... they didn't HAVE to work 12-16 hour days, they got television, more personal space, regular mail, and phone access !!
God Bless my fellow service members... serving their country while being treated like sh!t by their Congress
