I got my 360 yesterday and i knew nothing about hooking up Xbox live...so i tried and it worked..i pluged it in back on my reciever and that was it...I think i may have done somthing wrong..It goes on Xbox live and the games r jumpy and u will walk forward and u will go left??

It is most likely your connection since Xbox Live is a Peer to Peer connection. What do I mean by Peer to peer?
Xbox does not use servers so if you have lag it is either the HOST who is hosting the games fault or your internet connection. When you get on a game say like Gears of War whoever is the host..is hosting EVERYONE's connection. So first determine you problem....other people or you then:
Get faster internet.....

there is a gyroscope in the controller, you'll need to stabilize that in order to correct your movement problems.
As far as the game lagging, i'm assuming your character is not moving fast enough and is dying. TRY PUSHING THE BUTTONS FASTER!! you probably suck at video games. the controller is a highly sophisticated device with pressure and speed sensors.
