I must admit, I am intrigued with the town's name for obvious reasons. What are your thoughts?

Altoona is a crap-hole. It's an economically depressed area. It used to be a lot better but it has really gone to pot. I remember there was a gay bar there when I was a kid called the La Pier. Once or twice a month, someone would drive by and hurl a brick or rock through the big neon sign and break it. Probably some hillbillies in a pick up truck. The denizens of this town do not seem particularly friendly to outsiders(straight or gay) That is just an observation from visiting recently. My recommendation is to stick with the big city atmosphere.

I used to live there... and just like any other place in Central PA, not really.

But it might be better than some other options. There are one or two gay clubs, which make it stand out a little more than the other small towns. When I was living in State College, we actually went to Altoona to go to the gay club... It's not bad actually, now that I think about it.

Oh and Penn State Altoona is there so there's a lot of college students.

So, in other words, it's fun but not necessarily safe to be a lesbian there.

I don't know if you were asking seriously, but oh well, there's your serious answer.

I do not think so, I used to stay around the State College/Lockhaven area and the people in that area just do not seem that open to changes and different people
