John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth. However, Alan Shepard was the first American in "space" as we define it. His flight was sub-orbital however and was ballistic in nature.

On the contrary, Yuri Gagarin was both the first man in space AND the first man to orbit the Earth at the same time. The US did not accomplish orbit until a year or two later.
