They are put in a certain order because some keys are not used as much as others, so the keys that aren't used much are put in more hard to reach spaces (if you use home keys)

They aren't in alphabetical order because they are sorted out by how much we use them, for example, i never use Z so it's not in very good reach.

The qwerty layout of today was created to be able to type as fast as a typewriter with heads for individual letters to type without jamming. Being so common, it continues today.

Because that would not be the most efficient layout for typing with more than one finger.
