One popular theory for why we stand is that, as forrests retreated to be replaced by wide open grass-lands, our ape-like ancestors were forced to move away from a life based in trees.

They therefore evolved into a body shape that is more adept and moving long distances over flat ground (longer legs) and able to detect danger and food over longer distances without needing to climb trees (tall and upright).

As far as I know, the main reason that we are upright is so to make use of our front paws. I.E. our hands. As soon as we started using our hands the advancement of the species accelerated enormously. We could begin to make simple tools and eventually fire, etc. It is this that has vastly increased the gap between us and our ape ancestors. However, a vertical stance comes at a price. We now bare all our vital organs to potential enemies, rather than having then hidden below us and most telling of all; human babies are born so early because the upright stance of human females means the baby must pass through the pelvic bone, therefore must be born much earlier or it would be too big to fit through.

We have the basic skeletal structure of mammals and decended from apes. We have very similar structure to them but are slowly adapting to upright position, but not quite there yet. The way we move is desigend as ideal and as econimical to our body shape as possible and for us it's walking / running.

Because we're descended from apes, so we only have small modifications from their body plan.
