We were actually told that in previous years, we did not have enough blacks in the school to take the day off. That's stupid and seems wrong.....this is a national holiday for all, not just for blacks.
I'm really only talking about government (schools) being off.

Wow - that is the worst reason I've ever heard for not having MLK day off! I agree with you, everyone should have that day off. Schools here in Massachusetts have the day off, and I'm pretty sure all the schools in the Southern US have it off, too. I know around here a lot of companies don't give their workers (such as my husband) the day off.

Perhaps you should write a letter to your state congress people suggesting that they join the rest of the country and make today a mandatory day off for public schools and all other state agencies.

i am going to assume you're truly asking this question out of lack of archives and under no circumstances racism. MLK day is a federal vacation which signifies that each and each human being federal, state and local authorities workers to boot as some deepest workers get it off. deepest organizations dont inevitably ought to take off federal vacation journeys and some do no longer. also many colleges also get it off regardless of the makeup of the close by inhabitants. i trust that arizona is the in trouble-free words state that doesnt recognize MLK day.

Very good question. There are so many companies that have to function on this day because production must go on for tomorrow. I know that we all should be off work but I am sure if Martin Luther King was alive he would still be working to help African Americans on this day. Think about. I am very proud to work on this day because I know my leader who have worked right along with me And I am glad that this holiday is finally a national holiday for most. And I am glad most of us can take it as an optional holiday.

I think it should also be a holiday-or at least a half holiday. Workers should get half the day off, I was surprised that all the stores were open today...on new years, that is a half holiday, and I think MLK is more important than new years.

Slowly but surely everybody will be on board with this.

A lot of private companies lose employees because people take off either because they want to honor MLK or because their children are out of school and they have to stay at home to care for them.

Where the hell do you live?! I've always had off for this- I wish everyday was Martin Luther King day, but there are a ton of other national heroes that we don't get off for, so that's a flawed argument. Louis and Clark doubled the size of our country and led to westward expansion and we don't get anything for them.

a lot of people think that MLK was a hero for the black man. that is not true. He had an Ideal of equality for all races. and just because your ethnic group is the one doing the oppressing rather than being oppressed doesn't mean that its good for your ethnic group I say being fair to all does more honor to you than finding a minority to oppress. oppressing a minority shows a weakness of character that I think MLK and other minority leaders have helped all of us to overcome
