Holding a PhD does not make one a professor.

Many people get a PhD in a professional field, like engineering, microbiology, or finance, for example, and work in the private sector. They do not teach anything, therefore they are not professors.

In order to be a professor, one must be hired to teach at a college or university.

When one is hired as an adjunct, an instructor, a lecturer, an assistant professor, an associate professor, or a full professor, then one achieves the title of Professor.

Once you get your PhD you have to go through the job search process, and in some fields at some univeristies, the number of applicants will exceed the number of available positions. It is more common, then, to get hired as a postdoctorate student, or (for the fortunate) as an assitant professor. In most cases, full professorship comes with time, experience, and publication of scholarly work. The PhD is the beginning of the journey, but I understand that it can be a rewarding one.

Normally a professor teaches and engages in research, writing and giving lectures. I strongly believe that you have to make some sort of scholarly contribution in order to earn the title.
