I recently had my iPod stolen - like, really stolen; I'll never see it again - and all I can tell you is this: whatever you do, don't buy another one.
ITunes keeps track of the serial number of the last iPod that was connected to it. ITunes also goes online. If Apple kept a database of serial numbers that have been flagged as stolen, they could easily make it so that iTunes didn't work for those flagged serial numbers. As a matter of fact, if iTunes recognized that it had a flagged iPod connected to it, Apple could retrieve the IP address of that computer and send it to the police, who in turn could find out who was using that computer at that time. After a little bit of questioning, you'd have caught the thief and have your iPod back. At the very least, Apple could send your iPod back to you when the thief returned it to them to replace the battery, but they don't even do that.
Bottom line: Apple's a bunch of greedy bastards. Don't buy another iPod; that's exactly what the greedy bastards want you to do.
