I'm planning on getting a Ribbon snake when I move out. I want a small snake that won't get too large. I've done my research and figured that this is probably the best for me. Anyone have any advice about feeding, handling, etc?

All answers appreciated! =]

Wow, memories. Ribbons are cool, but a bit flighty, you could end up with a nice one that doesn't mind handling, but then again, you could get a spaz.

These snakes love water. Be prepared to change it's water bowl on a very regular basis, he'll soak and probably poop in it. Luckily you'll be able to get him to eat pinkies, but most likely you'll be stuck with feeder fish. For a bit of variety if I remember correctly, our ribbons would also eat earthworms and such too, frogs are iffy because especially if you're collecting frogs from local ponds, they could be contaminated with pesticides and such, so steer away from that.

I don't think I've ever seen a care manual for ribbons, but I'm sure if you look in a field guide you can get an idea of what they need. Good luck.

Agree with above answer. These snakes are great for being pretty easy to care for, but as stated, they can be a little skittish about being handled. Try to vary their diet,as a steady diet of only feeder fish can cause a vitamin deficiency. Earthworms are a great treat for these guys and they will also take small salamanders & tadpoles when the weather warms up. These snakes are very similar to garter snakes in their care & handling which makes it easy to find care sheets or info. Enjoy your new critter!
