I have a thirty six year old house which had damp from the
chimney coming through on the bedroom wall four years ago.
This was intially cured by repointing the chimney, but last year it happened again and was stopped by spraying all the brickwork
with a water repellant. Now this weekend with strong winds and rain the damp patch is back.

I have an open fireplace with an electric
fire which covers the opening and newspaper in the flue to stop draughts as
recommended but have never seen a vent
on the bedroom wall backing on the chimney.

first have you got a pepper pot on your chimney ..these allow the chimney to breath ..second have you got a vent grill in the chimney breast in the room with the damp patch..if you have not got both ..i would suggest you start with that ..the flue must be vented or capillary retraction will pull in the damp

the lead flashing may have been done wrong but i would change the chimney pot for one that prevents rain from coming down inside the stack and no amount of damproofing will stop damp if you have a cracked roof tile somewhere . a house doesn't need to be waterproof anywhere other than the roof , as it's 36 years old it is probably built with a cavity wall , you must find the entry point block that and the rest will dry of it's own accord

This is very similar to a problem we had. The lead flashing had lifted and the rain was seeping under it causing the damp on the wall. We had a roofer re-do the flashing and 10 years on we are damp free!

Sounds like what you need to try is to use a black roofing tar one the areas that your chimney connects to the house. You can go to any hardware store in your area and buy it in tubes. Just use a typical caulking gun. Make sure that all possible areas have it and make sure that there are not missed areas or bubbles.

I would climb into the attic when it is raining and try to see if water is getting in by the chimney.
