In most areas, they are actually about even as far as service. I would just look at the programming packages that each one offers and go with the one that suits you best.

Dish Network has the lowest pricing and the most amount of HD channels right now. I would look online at each of the providers websites for the programming and pricing. Both are going to be affected by weather with no difference. Dish Network does offer credit for service when you are without.

I've had Direct TV and now I'm on Dish primarily because Dish has more HDTV channels AND Dish has an available HD DVR while Direct TV can only put you on a waiting list for a HD DVR.

As for equipment reliability, I've had no problems with either. Dish Network call in tech support has been very helpful as well.

I'm on dish network and its frikkin HORRIBLE!!! In the last year they have sent me 7 faulty receivers, had to have 5 or 6 service calls. They don't give credit for down time. I was without service at least a total of 3 weeks last year while waiting on a new (refurbished junk) receiver or a service call.. My sister has direct tv and she NEVER has any problems...

I would have to say dish. You get better programming for less money. Picture quality and all that are the same between the two. You can't beat the 29.99 a month plan from Dish. Its great! It's even better right now because you get it for 19.99 for ten months.

I prefer Dish cause:

- cheaper
- more channels
- good picture quality

You might check out http://www.dishnetworkbargains.net for they currently run some promo and they are really helpful and professional.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes
Mike

Sometimes it *truly* depends on environment. In our weird little high-altitude mountain town (Santa Fe, NM) some folks required dish because water in the arroyos (water run-off) kept damaging the cable) and some folks in the foothills required cable because snow kept covering the dish!
