what are you looking to pay? the bigger the better! if you're considering filtered, make sure it's an adjustable flow, bettas need soft currents. also, a long tank is better than tall. bettas with very long tails (VTs and HMs especially) can sometimes struggle getting up and down a tall tank. ALSO if you go filtered, remember to cycle your tank before your fish goes in! I have preference towards filtered tanks as my bettas have always been happier that way. And a filtered tank has more options decor wise, mine are planted, which would be harder to maintain in unfiltered. Also, you'll only need to do 1 water change a week, rather than several with unfiltered. The tanks I use are AquaOne and Mirabello. I also have a Fish R Fun hex which was my first tank, but I don't recommend it for bettas. It's a bit tall.

Just buy the biggest tank that you can afford and want to maintain. If you like fish, you'll be tempted to buy a lot and a bigger tank can hold more than a smaller tank of course.
You'll need a bigger filter. They recommend an absolute minimum of 5 gallons per hour of filtration per gallon, so you'll need a 50 GPH filter or bigger. They also suggest a heater that puts 3-5 watts per gallon of water, so you'll need a 30-50 watt heater. Get a little thermometer to keep the tank in the ideal range. Finally, they suggest 2-4 watts of light per gallon of water, so you'll need a 20-40 watt bulb.
See my post in the thread I linked for suggestions on what to put with your Betta.

Contrary to popular belief bettas don't live in 1 gallon containers happily, what they do is survive. If you want to see your betta growing, healthy, and looking even better I would recommend giving the guy some room. I would head out and purchase a 10 gallon for him. 10 gallons are about the cheapest tank you can set up and it will give him some room to swim. I know you can set the whole tank up for less than $100 and your betta is going to do so much better than in a 1.5 gallon prison.

I would recommend at least a 5 gallon tank, but a 10 gallon would be better. Get a 25-50 watt heater and the penguin mini filter for it.

Sounds like it's needed now as in ASAP to me. A big glass vase might do, I mean, we are talking about a beta here, not an oscar or anything. If it's an emergency situation, the pet store I go to sells their betas in plastic cups, so if nothing else for a temporary fix.......
good luck.

If it's just the betta 1.5 gal should be fine. They are a fairly quiet fish and they don't need a lot of room.
