There are some signs of this sometimes. Not always. Those signs can include: Your computer running slow, popups (usually alot of them that can lead to your computer crashing), your homepage changing, etc...
One way to be sure is to run a virus scan and to run Spybot. You can get a free virus protector at:
www.avast.com
You can also get Spybot for free at:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Hope this helps.

The best way that I know of is to install "anti-spyware" software. There are many to choose from. The one I use has about 15 different "anti's" such as: anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-adware, anti-virus and you can even set it up to record screen captures and keystrokes (without the users knowledge) in case you allow someone else to use your computer. It will even report to what websites the user visited. It also encrypts any files that you want to keep secret. And does a whole bunch of other stuff. You can look to spend maybe $30.00 of $40.00 and the protection is well worth the cost.

Install a firewall program like Sygate. The intruder will have to receive permission to access the internet and you can then identify it.
