I volunteer at one but the Director put up her own money and started with a few kennels. We are now supported by loving donations of the community and have 20 outdoor/shaded kennels and 20 indoor/night time climate controlled kennels. That has been 15 yrs. of hard work for her raising funds. She goes form 8 in the morning till 9 at night some days. I'm in awe of anyone who puts that much heart into it. Best of luck!

For all you people saying NO, I think your thinking about how the poor lil animals get killed for no reason. My husband works for animal services and I know what dangers there are. How would you feel if a rabid dogs growls and tries to bites you and chases you? Or a feral cat that scratches and bites you until you BLEED. OR the sick little kittens that are going to have a loooong drawn out death. I am all for the killing of those animals because it makes the public AND other animals safer! And no I dont agree with them killing animals after a week but that only happens at FEW animal shelters in the country. What else would you do with the overpopulated animals? They say there is 7 dogs for 1 human...thats the reason everyone should spay or neuter their dogs and cats. So they dont have un needed put downs.

I worked at our local animal shelter & they tried their best to be a no kill shelter - they did however have to uthenize when the animals were in too much pain or too sick to be helped. We also had to put them down if they were too hostile after trying to work with them for a few days - there was one dog there that had been there for 2 years before they put her down & they had to put cats down more often due to lack of space but honestly they really tried to keep them as long as they could but sometimes there just isnt enough money - thankfully they added on so that helps some :]
Starting up a totally new shelter would be really hard; why dont you try talking to the owner of the existing shelter & see if you guys can maybe put together some kind of fundraiser to add onto the shelter & try to keep the animals longer. Also - what might help advertise the animals so they arent there as long are a few things that our shelter does - they walk the animals in all the parades, they have flyers of adoptables at places like wal mart in the pet section & they even have a web site. Best of luck to you; I doubt I helped but I tried haha .

Animal shelters now barely get enough funding even using the practice of euthanizing the dogs and cats so I think your idea is quite worthy but the outlook for that much funding is pretty slim unfortunately. On the flip side if you were to help raise funds for awareness or just enough so they could afford to keep the dogs or cats for even one more day , that would be a beginning at least and save many animals. It is an unfortunate situation .

There are simply too many animals and not enough homes. The shelter where I volunteer gets in at least ten dogs a day. Many of them are aggressive or elderly. In short, not adoptable. We put our focus on finding homes for the animals we do have, but more come in than there are homes for. Perhaps you should focus on spay/neuter education. If everyone spayed and neutered their pets, we wouldn't have this problem.

You need to contact a NO KILL shelter and find out what it takes to run one--like are they privately funded or who carries the cost of housing the animals--

I'm pretty sure that That Pet Plcae and PetzMart don't put animals down but I'm pretty sure that there is a limit to how many pets there are
