I want to buy one to play games like age of empires 3 , hl2 (yeah I know they're pretty old now) at the highest possible display settings and no getting choppy and am wondering which video cards can do the job best without hurting my wallet a lot

I recommend nVidia GPUs. 8800GTX, 7950 GT, 7600GT, 6600GT... All of these should be able to play those games on highest settings with not too many problems. Of course, the higher the number, the better the performance, and the higher the price. You should be able to find any of these nVidia GPU's made by BFG or eVga at any local computer store or even stores online. These are all GeForce graphics processors.

If you really do have a PCI-Express slot, then it matters how much you are willing to spend. Higher the price, usually the higher the performance. A X1900 XT is a pretty good buy at around US $200. Goto www.tomshardware.com to see video card benchmarks to give you an idea of how a video card will perform.

You will never get the best for cheap. Currently the best sell for around $600. Use this link for comparisons with various benchmarks. Figure out what you are willing to spend and get the best one you can afford.
