OK, some people have good suggestions.. but some just have terrible ones....
1- DO NOT PUT warm water on your windshield... it may not break your glass... because your windshield is made of layers of plastic + glass... but you may crack it or create imperfections which will really show when the sun shines on it. Also when your warm water runs down your windshield it may slip under your hood and ice up parts under there, which should melt.. but you should just stay away from those things.. not a good habit to get into...
2- DO NOT PUT salt on your windshield! most retarded thing ive heard yet... itll kill your paint job and will corrode your windshield so that when your driving while its sunny... the sun will reflect off your windshield in 1000 different directions and everything infront of you will look glazed over and blurry, sorta...
3- WHAT TO DO! option....
a) take a hair blower and attach it to an extension cord and try defrosting it that way (while you have your car on and the heaters from inside blowing) - prolly the best way... just dont get the cords wet so you dont electricute yourself =x
b) if your ina big rush.. take a razor blade and CAREFULLY (without cutting yourself or the windshield..) CAREFULLY (the ice is slippery..drr) scrap off a layer or two of ice so that its easier to scrape off with your scraper or a credit card...
c) scrape until your arms hurt...

any of those options will work... good luck and hope that helps!

Warm or hot water WILL break your windshield, occasionally. If you want to take the chance, go ahead.

The safest way is to start the car and let the heater/defroster melt the ice closest to the glass. Takes a little longer, but much less likely to cause damage. Once the bottom layer is melted, the rest will come off easily with a scraper.

Yeah, really hot water, a sledge hammer, 12 gauge shotgun with slugs, salt.
The only thing salt and hot water should be used for is potatoes.

Or you could use the defroster, and get yourself a couple of cans of De-icer and a gallon of the mix to put in your windshield washer reservoir.

I'd caution you about using warm water. I would just turn the car on and crank the heat and fan up. Should take about 15 minutes and the windows should be fine. The one thing that will suck is that the side mirrors won't thaw unless you have heated mirrors.

DO NOT use hot or warm water you will be asking for disaster. i.e busted windshield I use car defroster and cold water, it takes a few minutes longer but well worth the time spent.

Do not use warm water! (Yes, it can crack a windshield) Do not use salt! (Salt can do damage to the paint, gaskets, etc) Use an ice scraper and then let the cars defroster do the rest.
