That depends on how light colored your carpet is. White or off white will stain. Darker colors means you can't see the scotchguard stain.

Advise is: No. Why? if it gets dirty clean again. You will be taking a chance by using scotchguard. Plus my experience is it does not really do the job that they claim it does.

Most all professionals use "Scotchguard" of some sort. If you did it yourself, then YES. It makes it easier for to clean them the next time around.
