ditto clam (suggested above), also grisoft (home of avg); you'll find lots of freebies for download at www.generalgeeks.com. But if I take it right, you're looking for *information*, not just software. Then you want to start at places like PC magazine's website. Remember when you run searches on the web, Yahoo!'s search methods are different from Google's so go to Yahoo! and search "free antivirus software" and see what you get, then go to www.google.com and search "free antivirus software" and see what you get, and you might see some good magazine articles to read!

To be truthful it truly is a be counted of selection. commercial AVs are as a lot as date speedier and once you've any themes you've tech help to again you up. Freeware AVs are as a lot as date a lot less immediately, per chance extra sturdy to apply, yet are free Open source AVs...it truly is a difficult one to guage. the actual undeniable reality that that is open source signifies that it has a probable progression crew of thousands and thousands of distinctly experienced programmers. a majority of those AVs are frequently free to acquire yet can wade through from the actual undeniable reality that virus writers would learn the way the engine works and discern out a thanks to disable it or cover their software from it. As a be conscious notwithstanding issues interior the international of viruses are replacing...rootkits have develop into primary and there exists rootkits that ought to cover themselves from the anti-virus. Your suitable AV is effortless experience....do not acquire unlawful/"cracked"/"keygen" kind classes as those frequently contain viruses. Use a threat-free browser (firefox), do not visit web pages that you do not think, do not open attachments or information that are not from relied on elements. replace regardless of AV you've commonly and be careful of P2P filesharing classes and their information that they percentage.

filehippo.com-- go the the third pink? box, virus protection, and download AVG free edition. I've used it for a long time and it works great. during setup, select the option that lets your programs have priority with the processor, or your pc will run slow during the daily system check. Best of luck.
And jeffpa, below, is wrong.

The only "free" virus protection is one which you will have
to run yourself, which IMHO is the worst way to go.
Pay for services run all the time on your machine, actively
protecting your machine.
Just think, of the cost of active protection, versus how much it will cost you if a bad thing happens?

Great free anti-virus and anti spyware at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads2.php
I use AVG, they now have anti-spyware as well (previously 'Ewido'). I can also recommend Spybot, all of these are 100% FREE and 100% EFFECTIVE and come with free updates. Why would any home users buy this type of protection when such superb software is freely available?
