with the rate of advancements in computer design and technology, why is Ceefax and Teletext still stuck in the 80's with it's very obvious (and rubbish) pixallated images and words? it has not advanced AT ALL in almost 30 years.

I actually work for one of these companies (won't say which one in case my boss is reading...)

The original analogue teletext system has hardly advanced at all since it was originally launched in the late 70s - the only change has been the introduction of Fastext buttons. This is because the decoder chips, which are in almost every TV in the country, are standard and there's never been any agreement on a new improved version (although one was proposed in the 80s).

However that's not to say that the services themselves are stuck in the 80s. Most people now have access to digital TV, on Sky or Freeview, where they can access faster and improved versions of the text services with better fonts and pictures. And of course the BBC and Teletext have launched their own websites and mobile services, giving users better versions of the content that they could previously only access via the TV.

I went to the tip the other day and saw a mountain of flat screen/wide-screen TV's all set to be buried because everybody suddenly HAS to have HD-LCD, even though only two channels broadcast HD for six hours a day!

We have to have everything new, even if the old works just as well (or better), even if the old is more reliable and lasts longer......IT MUST BE NEW. Not necessarily better, just seemingly modern!

Ceefax etc just gives the information you want, no frills, just what you asked for......what can possibly be wrong with that? Here's to the next thirty years I say.

It is quicker and more informative than any other of the digital ways of getting information via the television.
