It's probably not a good idea to put them in the same room. The baby will be sure to wake up at frequent intervals and this will disrupt you 12 month child's rest. I think it's better to keep the baby in your room and your other child in his own room.

I understand, apartments and mobile homes have these problems.... I would suggest:
Have your 12 month old still sleep in crib, at this time have a bassinet for your newborn..
I would have the 12 month old ready for a toddler bed ASAP, without really rushing the toddler, then you can move the baby into the crib
Also, have you ever considered putting the bassinet in your room? My reasoning is that the newborn will most likely wake up the 12 month old with her cries, no?

First of all, if the room is separate than you room, you might want to keep the newborn in the room with you until he is a little older.
That said, the newborn does not need a lot of room at first so find a compact bassinet for him. The 12 month old should continue to sleep in whatever he is sleeping in (crib or whatever) if possible, because having a new sibling is a big enough change and you don't want to put too much on his plate, so to speak. The 12 month old is probably still too young for a toddler bed.

I wouldnt suggest takeing the 12 month out of the crib unless you prepair him for sleeping in a bed. If it is at all possible and you want him in a toddler bed start him off slowly so that when the baby is born he will be sleeping every night in his/her new bed so the baby can have the crib. Or put the baby in a bassinet in your bedroom until the 12 month old is ready to give up the crib. I mean after all your newborn will be waking through the night and if in the same room with your 12 month old more then likely wake him up too then you'd have two that you needed to get back to sleep

If you needed to keep the 12 month old (wow you have your hands full!!) in the crib, you could try a pack and play with a bassinet attached inside until the new big boy or girl gets accustomed to a toddler bed then you have your crib back..Plus you have have the pack and play in your room or living room for the first couple weeks or months, my sis did this. Her 14 month old was still in a crib when they brought my neice home, they put the pack and play in the living room and let her sleep there, plus during the day it is nice not to have to climb stairs or inturrupt naps. Then once the toddler bed is working let the baby use the crib,...this also allows time for the once baby to get used to being the bigger sibling...good luck

I would ask the toddle if they want a bigger bed? If they say yes than go get a toddler bed. Let him/her pick out a new sheet for the bed. And then when the baby is ready to be put into the crib do the same in away, ask the older sibling to help, even if it's what sheet to put in there or have the older sib. pick out a baby safe stuff animal.
Don't forget to explain that the baby is going to be sleeping in the same room. That's what we are doing with my step-daughter that lives with us, we are expecting a newborn and it's only been her for 3 years, so we are having her help us with a lot of thangs (even though she's only 4) She really get into helping too, and makes her feel special. No they aren't sharing rooms....
As for the toddler bed a 1 year old is old enough to sleep in one, just make sure that the room safe for the child and I would put up a gate in the door way. For the child can't get out.

I recommend puting the toddler bed on one wall at the back of the room, and the crib on the other wall at the back of the room.. then put a dresser in between the top of the beds on the back wall that they can share... then take the toddlers toys and put them in a toy box.. I have one that snaps shut and my son can't get into so there isn't a huge mess... as far as the babys toys, it shouldn't have that many for you to worry about, but when it does, just add them to the toy box.. I would limit how many toys they have.. each time you buy the kids a toy, they have to get rid of one of their old ones... it saves on space, and there won't be a huge mess to pick up.. Also it may not hurt to put in shelves up on the walls for their books, puzzles, and other little things... and buy one of those nets you see at the store, for their stuffed animals.. it hangs in the corner of the room.. as far as legos, or the really small toys, put them at the top of the closet, and get them out only every once in a while.. I find that those are the most pain in the butt things to pick up because there are so many of them and that is usually what my sons dumps everywhere first... Good Luck and I hope some of this helps...

Put two cribs in there, side by side or L-shaped. Hang things that are age-appropriate off the side of each as "decoration". Keep the rail halfway down for the one year old and give that child a stepstool. They can get hurt trying to climb over the rail..and they will try that! Matching cribs can double nicely as toddler beds when you paint or decorate them as the kids advance in age. The three sided protection was a comfort to me. My kids are in college now, but that's what I did and it saved me alot of money and space. I bought two white cribs from GoodWill and painted them to match the room decor.

Why not put the infant in a bassinet in your room? Night time baby care will be much easier and you won't have to worry about disrupting the older child's sleep.

Toddler bed for 1 year old? Please be sure to have side rails. extra temporary rails can be purchased in K-mart, Walmart or try consignment stores. Be sure they meet latest safety standards.
Also, be sure to get baby monitors!
What worked for us... was new born stayed with Mom mostly the first 9 months made feedings easier. Dad stayed within DD room. Roll-away bed. (( it is not that difficult, when both children were fast asleep, Hunny&I could get quality time together.)).
