The MPAA web site lists the reason as language. That usually means multiple uses of the 'F' word.

Good movie, saw it quite a while ago - it deals alot with racism, similar to last year's movie "Crash". If it's R for language, it's not necessarily just for the "F" word. Jody Foster directed the movie "Home for the Holidays" and stated that that movie got an R rating just for using the word c_cksucker.
