I have a feeling it was John Lloyd at the Aussie Open, but I'm not completely sure.

John Lloyd was the last British player to appear in a Grand Slam Final before Greg Rusedski in 1997.

Lloyd lost to Vitas Gerulatis in the December verison of the Aussie Open in 1977 (the Australian Open was played twice that year, it was played in January for the '76 season)....6-3 7-6 5-7 3-6 6-2
