labs and jack russell terriers are very good with children. If you look at it this way any dog is good with chilren if you get them when they are puppies and raise them with the kids. I had a pitbull with three small children my brother was just a baby when we got her and she never nipped or bit him no matter what he did to her. It all depends on the enviroment and what age you get the dog at.

My cousin just got the type that's like a small collie. She has younger kids, and this dog is so sweet. She'll only get to be about 12 inches high and about 20 lbs. Sorry, wish I remembered the kind.

i prefer big dogs, however let me tell you about my sister. she has a female rat terrier, they are small (5 lbs at 6 months) and don't really like living outside (short hair, similar in size to a chihuahua but MUCH better personality). she has 3 small kids (4 and under) and the dog fits in great.

i don't think they are a recognized breed, but i'm sure you could look them up in the paper. it really is a good dog.

We have two dachshunds and we love them. The female is aggressive but never bites. The male thinks that he is a human. He watches TV with us. They were given to us and I have never had a dachshund before and never been around any. They are easy to live with. We also live in a small 2 bedroom mobile home.

I'd say rat tettier. They're good with all ages and they don't seem to outgrow their desire to play. I'd also suggest you get a male and have him neutered. I've read that females as they get older get moody and don't like to play as much. I think that was for dogs in general. Rat terriers are short haired, smart, loving, fun and easy to train. They come in several different sizes and I'd suggest a mid size to be around kids. You can read on them at this site. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ratterrier.htm

Basset hound --they are short --but very stout--they get along well with children --short haired so there is less hair problems than a long haired type of dog--
