I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Congressional election yet. The Democrats took control back from the Republicans for the first time in 12 years. It could be a turning point politically, or it could end up being a short term gain that the Democrats fail to capitilize on. But either way, it's probably the year's biggest historical event in the U.S.
Several people have mentioned the Iraq war and decrease in freedoms for American citizens. While these are important, they're also ongoing events that began prior to 2006, so I don't know if I'd count them. I think 2006 was the year that Habeas Corpus (sp?) was suspended, though, so that's a major step within the ongoing erosion on freedoms in this country.
Others have mentioned Saddam Hussein's hanging. That's probably up there on the list, although his being driven from power in 2003 was far more important.
Actually, I'm noticing a trend now that I think about it. 2006 had a lot of continuations of things that had been going on for a couple of years, but not many major, unique historical events of its own. There was no start to a war, major hurricane or tsunami, etc to really define the year like there have been in other recent years. At least, not from an American perspective.
So as I said, I'd call the Congressional elections the biggest event of the year for the U.S., especially since they led to the first female Speaker of the House.

Well, they SHOULD be...increased secrecy of the US government (Military Tribunal Act, Govt response to Freedom of Information requests, increased secrecy due to "national security)
And the decrease of privacy for US citizens.
This is an enormous shift in power and will forever change the US.
