Because it's easier than trying to do it themselves. Too many people are stupid and lazy and think 'the Government' is a magic fairy who will provide all their needs from the cradle to the grave.

Ideally, the government would create an environment that would encourage the development and manufacture of alternative forms of energy. Not directly create these new technologies. By making the taxation and administration of new industries more conducive to companies to pursue this research, we can hopefully cause this to happen faster.
This is the same as people making the statement that government makes or creates new jobs. Businesses create new jobs by prospering. And they prosper at a higher rate when government meddles less in their affairs.

The government can put pressure on oil companies along with the American people to decrease their demand of foreign oil along with increase intake of alternative energy products. Only with the public support can the energy crisis be solved. Movies and activist try to put awareness in the public. If people actually listen to activist then politicians would demand extreme reform.

Usually when a new use of alternative energy is discovered that will remove the need for using fossil fuel ie oil, the inventor`s discovery is supressed by ridicule by his corporate sponsored peers or he is bought off by energy companies and made to sign agreements concealing his discovery from the public. Sad but true.

they can FUND the creation & implementation of alternative energy. there already are some alternatives, biofuel, etc. that aren't even getting help to be implemented.
but why would the gov. do that? those in power right now make the big bucks from oil, they wouldn't want to encourage using something else!!

Maybe it isn't easy, but don't you think its time we did something to help ourselves? Shouldn't we do something to become independent of foreign oil? The government could do a damned site more than they have done if there weren't so many big oil companies in their pockets begging them not to.

Nothing worth achieving is ever easy. But the government can be a significant impetus. It was a government project, after all, theat produced the first A-bomb.
