I guess because they want to make sure you hear it, all it makes me do (if I'm watching live TV or not at home) is mute the tv! So they aren't really gaining anything if anyone else is like me...
I don't really care why I just wish it would stop, although it doesn't matter all that much to me because I have a Tivo. But it is really irritating! :-)

They do it so they can cram their products into your brain and make you want it more. I figure they make it louder because they know we all get up and leave to get something else to drink or use the bathroom. So they try to follow you with their jingle/talk about their products through out your house. I believe you can buy tv's that have like a set sound in them so that when things get louder your tv won't. Trust me I want one too, I can't stand screaming commercials.

There was a device to turn the sound down which is what the mute button on the remote does now. It be could be triggered by the increased noise or done manually. It could be set for length of silence, but how can you know exactly when to turn the sound back on? It would also turn off the volume when not intended when the passage got loud.

Commercials are louder because most people get up and walk away to do other things during commercial breaks, advertisers want their commercial heard. No there isn't really anything that you can do sorry.

Not only do they do this because they know you left the room, but now they try to add the sound of a ringing cell phone to grab your attention.
Years ago they had a smart feature built into some tv sets to level volume to avoid that. I just watch everything via a DVR and fast forward through the muck.

I know, it sucks! My husband can be hard-of-hearing, so he has the TV turned up loud so he can hear the show, but then the commercials come on and the walls shake. We got a TiVo, so now we fast-forward through all the commercials. That'll teach you to annoy us, you capitalist bastards! :o)
