I thought that movie was amazing, if you ask me.
If you're referring to Angier's wife dying in the beginning, that was an accident. Borden used a different knot, because he wanted to make sure she didn't fall, but everything went wrong when she couldn't escape from it. Angier believed it was Borden's fault she died, and this is where the conflict begins between the two magicians.
Hope that cleared everything up.

That is a great movie!!!!!! I believe it was an accident,if I remember correctly,Borden tried tying the knot a different way and she couldn't get it undone. Robert then assumed that he had done it on purpose which started the fight.

i believe it was an accident, because throughout the entire movie he is asked what knot he tied but he responses with i dont know, so this i think leads to him doing it by accident.

yes! I love that movie, and no he didn't mean to kill her, it was an accident which he blamed on the other guy, starting the competition.

please specify your question
but...i think you are referring to when the girl dies in the water tank, well, i think that that was not supposed to happen. Someone from the public (his enemy magician) tied her knot the wrong way so she wasn't able to untie herself.
