Actually, EVERY square is a rectangle, since the angles in a square are always right angles. That's more than saying that a square CAN be a rectangle; it IS.

And since squares are rectangles, you know that some rectangles are squares--namely, the squares are!

These ideas confuse many people. It may help to think about other categories, like dogs and animals. Can a dog be an animal? Of course, every dog is an animal! Can an animal be a dog? Yes, if you look at a dog, that is an animal that is a dog. But not every animal is a dog. It's almost silly to ask and answer those questions.

It sounds less silly with squares and rectangles, but the idea is the same. The trouble is that in everyday life, we usually use the word "rectangle" to refer to non-squares, because if the shape were a square, we would call it that. So we teach children "this is a rectangle, that is a square--the rectangle's sides are different
lengths". But when you grow up, it's important to think of the square as a SPECIAL rectangle, because it is all that a rectangle is, and more.

It's as if someone looked at your dog and said, "What a fine animal you've got!", and you answered, "That's not an animal--that's a pedigreed Labrador Retriever." The specific type of animal matters to you, because it's special; but it really is still an animal too. And a square is still a rectangle--but it's not JUST a rectangle, it's a (pedigreed) square.

No , a rectangle is not a square but a square is a rectangle. The definition of a rectangle is that it has 4 parallel sides and four 90 degree angles which a square has. However to be a square you also have to have congruent (equal) sides.

A rectangle is a rectangle and a square is a square! A square has all 4 sides that are of equal length where as a rectangle has only 2 of equal length! If a rectangle is a square then it is called a SQUARE not a rectangle!

No a rectangle has 4 90 degree angles and 2 sets of sides that are equal length. A square is different because it has 4 90 degree angles and ALL 4 SIDES ARE OF EQUAL LENGTH. A rectangle's sides do not all have to be equal. Sorry but your teacher is right...

not in all cases-under some circumstances, a rectangle CAN be a square. In fact, it's a fairly popular saying-"A square is always a rectangle but a rectangle is not ALWAYS a square." Your teacher may very well have been right depending on what he said.

Just the opposite.

All rectangles have four sides, the two sets of parallel sides are equal length (four-sided figure with four right angles). A square just happens to have both sets of sides the same length (width = length). Therefore, the square is a type of rectangle.

The question is 'How stupid are you?'

A Square can technically be categorised as a Rectangle and not the other way. But generally Squares and Rectangles are different. A Square is a special Rectangle as a Right-Angle Triangle is a special triangle.

All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.

A rectangle is a four-sided figure containing four right (90 degree) angles. A square is a rectangle with equal length on all four sides.
