Definition: Democracy - government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

Republic: Republic - a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.

(from dictionary.com or any source you want) the point being the power in a democracy is in the hands of the people, in a republic it belongs to a small select group that may or may not represent the people.

Do you Republicans know that's what your party is about, taking power AWAY from the people and giving to a small powerful caste?

Speedy is right. When LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 all the southern Democrats became Repukians. The GOPs have been on the side of fascism since the 30's right up to supporting the fascist in Iraq in the 90's.

Has anyone taught you the Constitution of the United States? Damn that public education! This is a republic yet those idiots at Occupy Wall Street are still there.......I guess they really do have the freedom to express themselves. A republic means that we (the people) elect representatives to represent us in the government. You, my friend, want the tyranny of the many. You have no concept of democracy or anything else for that matter.

First the United States is not a democracy. It is a represenative republic. The people elect represenatives to vote the issues for them. Hopefully the people will elect represenatives that will vote their wishes but this does not always happen. The only remedy the people have to combat this is to not return the represenatives to office when they come up for re-election.

Both parties are in many ways taking away power from the masses. The question is more how they are purchasing it. They democrats purchase it with entitlements. In both communism and socialism, they've both shown it creates less wealth for the masses than capitalism.

The ones that CREATE wealth are paid by society based on their perceived value while our tax system chooses to equalize the life style.

Ahhhhhh......the United States has been a Democratic Republic for many many years, apologize to your civics teacher for asking that question. Also, look back to the original Republican long ago, you now call them Democrats. Ask your civics teacher to explain to you how the Republicans of yesterday are similar to the Demos of today. Glad my tax dollars went to supporting your education.

Some of them don't know.

Some of them don't care, as long as things go their way.

Some of them want a conservative dictatorship, and actively work AGAINST true democracy.

Look, as long as our leaders are Pro-Life, hate gays, and are for a strong military that can kick some towel-head a$s, they'll mindlessly vote for them.
