When you are injured, the tissue is crushed. This disrupts the normal structure and connections of the skin, including blood vessels, lymph vessel and connective tissue. You bruise because of blood leaking out of the vessels. You swell due to leakage of fluid into the tissue from blood and lymph vessels, but also in response to the injury. When tissue is injured, platelets are activated (among other cells) that release chemicals that recruit other cells to come and repair the injury. These chemicals also allow even uninjured vessels to "leak" so that inflammatory cells can get to site of injury. But this also leaks more fluid into the tissue causing swelling.

it swells up because fluid rushes to the "injured" area to help speed healing...and blood rushes to the area ... on a bruise....blood vessels have broken and the blood is then in the tissues...

You have tissue damage and the body is responding to it. The purple color is from the blood and the redness and swelling is form the increased circulation.
