My mom has a solid mass on her thyroid that she has to get cut out and have a biopsy done on it. I read on here that most (95%) of sold mass on the thyroid is benign. The doctor told her that the mass she has is big and because of the size of it, there is a possibility it is cancerous. The size is 4.8 x 3.0 x 2.4. I am really afraid for my mom going through this surgery because of her heart. Any thoughts on this would be really appreciated.

any mass has a possibility of being cancerous. That said I had a toxic goiter on my thyroid that was HUGE!, and it was benign, (my mother also had one when she was younger, apparently it is hereditary). Chances are that it is just a goiter
.
As far as the surgery goes I am sure it will be fine, does your mother have heart problems?

Best wishes, try not to worry too much

I just went through the same thing.
I had a 3.8 cm tumor in my thyroid. I had no other symptoms. I had to have a biopsy done first and then the surgery. After the first surgery they found that it was cancer.
The surgery is a safe surgery. I had to go through it twice two weeks apart. I actually was having heart problems the months prior to my surgery and it went fine.
The good thing is if it is cancer it is very easy to treat and some consider thyroid cancer to have a "cure". Once you get the lump out you have crossed the biggest hurdle.
I am 20 years old and was told I had a 3% chance of having cancer. Statistics don't mean anything. Because even out of the 95% percent of people that don't have cancer there is that 5% that does.
If you have ANY questions email me thebengalsfan04@aol.com. I would be happy to answer any of your questions and tell you about the surgery. There was a lot I wasn't ready for because doctors don't think to tell you some stuff. The best thing you can do for your mom is just to be there for her and it already seems like you are doing a great job of that!
You'll both be in my prayers.

There is a possibility it could be benign but the only way to tell is a biopsy and it needs to be removed.... as long as the Dr's are aware of her heart problem they will know what to do. Support is what she needs from you. Medicine has come a long ways you just need to worry about being there for her and believe that they will do their best. Thyroid problems tend to run in the family... remember that and make sure to have yours watched. I had a growth and it turned out okay but it's better to be safe and my aunt had Thyroid cancer and she's been cancer free for 30+ years now and she's doing wonderful and my friend also had cancer and she's also doing wonderful. Be positive and the best of luck to you and your mother :)

Most growths on the thyroid are benign. She very likely may have a goiter--I had one & it got quite large. Whatever the outcome, she has your support and comfort. That is really important.
