Since the nation is pausing to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., most people believe King was only concerned with the issues of African-Americans, or as Blacks were referred to then as "Negroes." But King's focus wasn't that small. He was concerned with the underprivileged, disenfranchised and poor people of all races. So having said that, what have you done to foster better race relations?

As an engineering educator, I go out of my way to encourage, challenge, build up, and "include" my Black and Hispanic students. I go the extra mile to ensure that they are aware of and have access to the help, advice and resources that they need to succeed in a challenging academic environment. I also take an active role in matching them up with local employers who will both pay them well and give them meaningful internship experiences in their chosen fields of study. Finally, I visit the local public high school, which is majority Black and Hispanic, to make students aware of career opportunities, and inspire them to work hard and pursue higher education.

I was raised in a city that at one time was completely segregated A federal Judge forced us to desegregate the public schools and the city gave us two choices... either go to a school they forced you to (Usually by bus) that they integrated for you OR choose a magnet school that specialized in an a subject of interest to you. I went to a grammar school for the gifted and talented(Brainiacks) and a highshool for visual and Preforming Arts(Like "Fame") . I had to be accepted into each school through IQ tests and auditions. Not only did we bring everyone together from all kinds of backgrounds, and races, but we got amazing educations and experience in our chosen career fields. Clicks were much looser and overlapped- people mixed and mingled and we all learned to love each others differences. This occurred in childhood... we grew up without hate for other racial or religious groups and many other cities in America mimicked this idea. It works!!

well i date a white boy we have been together for 3 years, the race issue does come up, we talked about stereotypes and racism, we agrred that some of us do fit stereotypes but never let that make u hate a RACE. i told him that i know my race isnt perfect but i hate how racist never talk about their own race like they are perfect. but after we get done talking about stereotypes and racism we laugh because we see how dumb it is

whoever said blacks are the most racist people on the earth is wrong we can be racist, but so can everyone else, if white are less racist, then how come there hasnt been a black president? here is the answer, and my bf who is white said it, a lot of whites are racist and if they arent racist a lot still think that whites can do better than blacks!!!!

racism is lame, all races arent perfect, just because a few do something u dont like dont mean anything. and it isnt about what we do, it is about our skin color. i mean look at oprah winfrey, she doesnt fit any of the stereotypes most blacks have but yet some still hate her because of her skin color.

i choose to not label people.

it doesn't matter where you're from or what tone your skin is. as long as you're a good honest person, then you're just another person.

once we start labeling, such as 'african american' then we're beginning to discriminate by isolating persons into a group and beginning the process... why we need to label different ethnic groups is beyond me, it just proliferates the issues at hand.

Doing my part to examine myself to kill any underlying racism, as well as teaching my kids that race is just a label, and that we are all human beings part of the human race.
