Actually, much of it was written by Eleanor Roosevelt, and it is a splendid document. After the atrocities of WWII the world wanted to lay out some simple ideas about the dignity of each individual.

It's interesting to look at what rights are included in the UNUDHR, and which we have started to do away with in the west.
