Local councils are useless but it's not always the councillors fault, often it's because they are powerless. At present the local council can try to set policy but the actual day-to-day running of the authority is done by an unelected chief executive and civil service, and most policies are mandated by central/regional governments and so local council have their hands tied.
I'd like the people in every local authority to directly elect their own (Lord) Mayor/Provost who would be both the head of the council and the chief executive. He/she would have wide-ranging executive powers to actually set policy and change some things. Local councillors should only be there to confirm/reject the Mayor's budget. That way everyone would know who to blame/credit and so local government would be more accountable. Even more importantly the Mayor/Provost would be a well-known personality and would have more clout than any current 'leader of the council'..

Ive not heard one good comment about local Councils.The one in Scunthorpe is the most backward in the world,having said that there`s allways some do gooder to have thier say..All local councils are Money grabbing Shits that have very little respect from its towns people

My local council are useless - they are so rude, never ring back, never reply to letters I send - but saying that when I paid my council tax late fair play they sent me letters and even rang my house - I can't complain I suppose as least I managed to speak to them and not get a recorded messaging service

Doesnt matter if its mindless waste,just raise the council tax for next term and blame it on ppl not filling wheelie bins correctly.

Yes - it certainly should be. That's what it's there for.
At present this does not always apply - but maybe one day when the instructions are changed for the better.
You must admit that they already do provide a lot of services to a lot of people.

i dont know where you live but our council just take the p*** out of us,but come may(local elections) we are getting organised to kick the blo***y lot out we have formed a community action party and we are going to fight every seat!vive la revolution
